What did I learn today????

20th January 2009,
During my first class I pictured a general view of what should be expected from this particular course. The points we have discussed in the class room pros and cons of globalization, different groups came up with different answers. And what I have noticed from the answers is that the groups that had majority Asians most of their answers were about the economic benefits, development, quality of life……..while listening to the Europeans and Americans their answers were more about sharing knowledge, product distribution, brands etc….so my learning from this group exercise is that we all come from different backgrounds and we think differently. So we will be more productive if we have cultural mix because then it creates an awareness from different prospective and views. And it will also educate everyone in that group about other cultural awareness and thinking. So what I learned is that by understanding the various cultures as a future manager it will assets me in understanding others, how cultures impact work place and finally self understanding and managing across cultures.

The reason behind to create this blog!!!!!!!

January 20th 2009. Today I have been introduced to the a new course which is “managing across cultures”………..when I first checked the course outline it made me laugh because when I came across cultural awareness it reminded me all the way back to my under-graduation time (Cyprus college).

Its was in 2004 spring semester I had been given the opportunity to choose my courses and I have to choose one elective course and I choose intercultural communication and awareness from another major which is not even a part of my program . I still remember that day when my advisor and friends asked me what was the reason to choose that program and I just couldn’t explain them why????

But after completing that course I went back to my advisor and said!!!!! We need to have a course like this in our program. Because being in the hospitality, we need to understand diversity between culture to culture. During our work place we meet and deal with people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. but the course advisor was not convinced…….i tried but I failed to do so…… during my practical training I went to work in intercontinental hotel, Cyprus
where they have staff of 43 different nationalities during my internship in that hotel it made me realize that its very important to know different cultures. After two and half years when I was graduating from the school…….my advisor gave me a copy of the reviewed course outline for the hotel management program……and I was surprised to see a particular course with a title “Cultural Awareness” and it’s a mediatory……..!!!!!!
One our first day….Dr. Bowerman (our course lecturer) asked us to create a blog and write about our experiences and list the things that we have learned in our weekly classes…….so that was the reason to create this blog…..so that I will express what I have learned in the class room……..

what i have to say.......

Date January 17th 2009, I arrived to Zurich around 13:30 from Qatar. The minute I landed on this beautiful country I felt like I am in heaven….. I never lived in a cold country before and it was my second time to see and touch snow in my life so I was really looking far word to spend my time and make memories in Switzerland…………

My first experience with snow if I recall it’s almost a year back when I was studying in Cyprus (European country from 2005)………….
i went with my friends to the troodos mountains (the only place in cyprus where u can actually see snow for just 2 months)........ i will never forget that day when i touched the snow for the first time.....
I felt the same way when i arrived to crans-montana!!!!!
